A Brother Takes A Stand In The Work Place

How often, as a Christian in the work place has one been obligated to be exposed to material in which God shuns and you despise?  In other words how many times have you walked across the room and on the table are magazines of the latest club happenings and latest amature model of the week who is practically half naked been left about?  I can attest that in my current place of employment one cannot go into the file cabinets looking for pens or pencils without there being a stack of Maxim magazines (Men's guide to celebrity, gear, hot girls and photos etc...) with the latest provocative woman on front.  I can trace this back to several positions in which I worked at companies prior to this.  My Internet filter would not even allow me to look at sites who were only mentioning the magazine!

Well, one person who I am proud to say I know has chosen to take a stand and I could not be more proud of him.  There have been a number of times where I have felt the nearing of upper management's request to not allow bibles or religious material in the work place.  I have prepared many speeches in my head of what I would say to this if it were to ever be implemented.  However, this brother has put it in words that I believe could not be better stated if one tried.  I commend what he has done, my hat is off to him and I will be praying for him as I believe he may have opened up Pandora's box at his place of employment.  He has taken a great risk in defending what he believes for Christ.   However, I would argue that if you know the mercies of Christ then it is no risk at all.  I have decided to omit names and companies and replace them with ***  in his email response below out of respect for their private lives.  Just a little background;  A certain company had one or some employees who left dvd's (creation science dvd's) for anyone who felt interested in looking at them.  They were not forced upon anyone nor where they taking shots at any other religious denomination.  One could easily walk by them and say "no thanks, not for me" and be on their merry way.  However, somehow, the dvd's got back to HR and then the email went out to the entire organization.  Below is the email by HR and the response by one brave employee who decided to stand for Christ in his work place.  I hope this encourages the believer greatly and causes others to think differently as well.

To All *** Employees:

It was brought to my attention this morning that three DVD’s were placed on the coffee table of the lobby.  These DVD’s were from the Lehigh Valley Baptist Church.  I must remind all of you that leaving anything like this around the company is prohibited and could easily be construed as harassment towards any employee not of the same religion.

It is imperative that all employees be diligent and respectful of the diversity we have here at *** ***, including religious diversity.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Response;

Hi *****,

I am not the one who left these out but I did see them around.  The point that I want to raise though is that if religious materials are considered harassment, then so are many of the periodicals left in the lunch room which display half naked or barely censored naked women.  Being respectful of religious diversity would include not allowing these materials as they are offensive to many people of faith across several religions not just Christianity.  These can also be construed as harassment towards female employees as well.  I do not see how leaving religious materials can be construed as harassment unless *** was allowing employees of one religious view and disallowing employees of another religious view to leave materials.

By banning employees from leaving religious materials *** can also run the risk of liability for religious discrimination as an employer is required to reasonably accommodate employees with sincere religious beliefs who feel they have the need to share their faith unless it poses an undue hardship.  Employers are allowed to ban religious practices only if other employees are feeling compelled to participate.  I do not believe this is the case with simply leaving literature or DVDs.

Check out this National Law Journal Article on just this subject http://www.law.com/jsp/article.jsp?id=1167904927807 .  *** needs to be cautious on how they approach this subject.

Regards,
